The day has finally come! After nearly 2 whole years, Elmwood Junior School is hosting another football match.

As players started to warm up, the crowd of pupils watching grew bigger and bigger. The intensity was building up gradually. Shouts of “Elmwood!” grew louder and louder. The game was about to start…

As South Norwood kicked off to open up the first half, Elmwood players were clearly distressed at the possession of the ball from South Norwood. However, as Mr Parkhouse shouted out instructions, a clear change was taking place.   Arber started to battle in midfield ferociously with Caleb; Mouctar and Fahad solid as a rock in defence, playing beautiful through balls to Muhammad and Uzayr, who got a few shots off. Unluckily, we hit the post early on, but passed the ball around quite calmly before Mouctar played a ball through to the midfield, and Muhammad found himself in a 1v1 situation, where he slotted the ball calmly past the goalkeeper. 1-0 to Elmwood, right before half time.

The second half began  with confidence growing amongst Elmwood’s players. Soon our substitutes were able to make an impact, capitalizing on South Norwood’s desperate attempts to equalize. Anthony was on the pitch for only a few minutes but was able to stab home two close range efforts to ensure a comfortable lead going into the closing stages of the game. As South Norwood pushed players forward, we were continuing to find positions to score but squandered some last minute chances to stretch our lead further. A solid first performance in front of a supportive crowd; a perfect start to the new season.
