Culture Day 2019

The school celebrated Culture Day on Friday 21st June. Pupils and staff were invited to wear national dress and colours which reflect their heritage. Some of the highlights of the day can be seen below: Line Dancing in Year 5 led by Mr Flood, The Haka in Year 3 led by Mr Mayes, Year 4 and 6 pupils in cultural dress and Year 4 exercising at the beginning of the day with Mr Cowan.

Soccer Aid

As you will know Elmwood Junior School is a Silver Award Rights Respecting School.  Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child stipulates that every child has the right to play.  To help children around the world access their rights, we at Elmwood participated in the Soccer Aid Challenge to raise funds.  This was a brilliant way for children to have fun while raising money to help children around the world.

All pupils were encouraged to donate £1 towards this worthy cause. The UK government will double every £1 raised, up to the value of £5 million. During the challenge, pupils kicked, bounced or carried a ball round an obstacle course that they designed with the support of a teacher.  The Challenge took place on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th June 2019.

SPOTLIGHT ON…Sports Captains

This week it’s Eesa and Ahmed!

Netball Champions!

Elmwood’s Netball team have performed extremely well this year. They have played many league matches and attended two tournaments. Their hard work paid off when they won the local league and made it to the finals at Croydon High. The girls have made fantastic progress this year and we hope for an equally successful year next year.

SPOTLIGHT ON…Sports Captains

Each week we will bring you two new interviews with our very own sports captains. To kick us off this week we have Hifza and Jasra.

Happy Eid Mubarak

Everyone at Elmwood would like to wish you all a Happy Eid Mubarak 2019!

Living Streets: Happy Shoesday Fundraiser

This year Elmwood Junior School took part in celebrating Living Streets 90th anniversary by participating in their Happy Shoesday fundraiser. Living streets is the UK charity for everyday walking and people behind the Walk to school (WOW) campaign. Their mission is to achieve a better walking environment and inspire people to walk more. We asked our pupils to participate in a five-day walking challenge.

On Tuesday 21st May children were allowed to wear their ‘happy shoes’ to walk to school and were invited to give a £1 donation. The money collected by the school will go towards Living Streets, the UK charity for every day walking –working to make streets safer for all since 1929.  If you would like to find out more about where your money goes please visit

Cycling Training

On Monday 7th May there was an exciting opportunity for 20 Year 3 and 4 children to take part in a two hour cycling course funded by Croydon Council. The course took place in our small playground and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Green Day

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our clean air campaign by wearing green and brown on Friday 3rd May. The money donated will be used to buy houseplants for the school- helping decrease air pollution in the environment.

New Additions!

Members of The School Council have been busy gathering opinions from their classmates regarding how to improve the school environment. Two popular suggestions were the addition of hand sanitisers and more water fountains. As you can see from the photos below these have been installed ready for the start of the Summer Term.

Billy Bob Buttons

On Wednesday 24th April Elmwood had a special visit from author Edward Trayer aka Billy Bob Buttons. Upper and Lower schools were treated to special workshops about developing character and planning adventure stories. Signed books were available to buy at the end of the day.

Clean Air Display

The work of Elmwood Junior School pupils is currently on display at the Children’s Library at Croydon Clocktower, Katherine Street. The information concerns our ‘Clean Air’ campaign and has been put together by Mrs Maharaj.
