Intent
At Elmwood all children are provided with many opportunities to develop and apply their writing skills across the curriculum. Our intention is for pupils to be able to:
- Plan, revise and evaluate their writing. To be able to do this effectively, pupils will focus on developing effective transcription and effective composition.
- They will also develop an awareness of the audience, purpose and context, and an increasingly wide knowledge of vocabulary and grammar.
- We also intend for pupils to leave school being able to use fluent, legible and speedy handwriting
Implementation
In order to help us to develop confident, enthusiastic writers who can express themselves in a variety of different styles and across a variety of contexts, our teaching of writing is often cross circular and linked to our class topics. We provide children with:
- Regular opportunities to write for a range of purposes and audiences.
- Writing tasks which are specific and meaningful, and often meet a purpose to engage children and to illustrate how their writing skills can be applied to real life contexts.
- Individualised points for improvement to ensure progress and target areas for support. Constructive feedback given regularly and the opportunity to talk to an adult about their writing
- Weekly/Daily spelling activities including the National Curriculum spelling lists.
Impact
As a result of carefully structured and sequenced curriculum, pupils will:
- Enjoy writing across a range of genres- being confident in using a ‘voice’ with which to articulate their ideas.
- Be able to succeed in all English lessons because work will be appropriately differentiated.
- Be developing a wide vocabulary that they use within their writing.
- Have a good knowledge of how to adapt their writing based on the context and audience.
- Be able to effectively apply spelling rules and patterns they have been taught.
